An Interview with Plentong – One of Theme Forest Top Author
24th Mar 2011 | Posted by Eko S. | 15 CommentsToday we have an exclusive interview with Dhimas Ronggobramantyo aka Plentong on Theme Forest, a web designer from Indonesia. He joined on envato marketplace since April 2009 and has to make 3,675 sales today.
In this interview, we’ll talk with him about his work-flow, strategies for selling templates, his advice for newbie to become a theme forest author, and more.
1. Please tell us a bit more about yourself and how you got started in the field of web design?
I started doing web design since I were at college. A friend of mine taught me about HTML and I immediately felt an interest in it. I then started to learn Photoshop, and after I graduated in 2007, I started my own web studio with my partner.
2. How long have you been in the web design business?
About 3 years.
3. When/How did you first come across the Envato marketplaces?
I stumbled upon it while browsing the web. The first one I came across was flashden.net (now activeden.net), which was Envato’s first marketplace. From there, I found graphicriver.net where I sold button templates, and got good results. Then I saw themeforest.net and started creating templates.
4. A new member signs up with ThemeForest and is hoping to upload his or her first item. Any advice, based your experience?
Be creative. Themeforest has a high design standard. We have to be consistent and detailed in designing. If you fail, try again, and again, and again. Discuss your design in the forums to get feedback from other members.
5. Describe your creative process. What steps do you normally follow to create your files?
The first step is, of course, looking for inspiration. I then use Photoshop to create the main page and convert it to HTML. After that comes the process of designing and converting the other pages.
6. Where do you look for inspiration?
I usually browse the web, looking at new and unique sites that are currently “in”.
7. How do you do to market your themes?
Currently only through Twitter, but I’m hoping to be able to use more channels to promote my templates.
8. Would you recommend a designer/developer to sell their design through ThemeForest rather than on their own? Pross and cons, in your mind?
If you have the capital, I’d say make your own site to promote and sell your designs. That way, you can name your own price and profits. If you decide to go through Themeforest, you have the advantage of not having to promote it, but you will have to compete with other creative designers, which constantly increase Themeforest’s standards.
9. Other question, what do you usually do in your spare time?
I like reading, especially comics. Hahahahaha… One Piece is my favourite.
10. And a final question. What’s your plan next?
I’d like to have a website like dynamicwp.net.
But it will of course be focused on design rather than wordpress. Thanks for your time Dhimas. Very nice to interviewing with you :).
Thanks for reading this interview. I hope you’ll get some inspiration. Please share your thoughts with us in the comment below.
